Dads in Business!

August 13th, 2009

Here is a Dad in business you need to check out; I saw Hans’s product at the Healthy Kid’s Expo last year and talked to his wife who told me about Ukoonto. I believe in supporting Canadian biz owners!

Why did you start your business?

It’s a combination of a few things. I’ve always wanted to start my own
endeavor and had been creating business plans for some time. I really love
reading about what others have done, especially when the product has
integrity, and is not only created for financial purposes. I’m also an
artist at heart and I love creating things, in this case a company.
Furthermore I was surprised to see that very little wooden toys are being
made in Canada. I grew up in Germany and those kind of toys are very popular
in Europe. Wooden building blocks are such an essential toy that I wanted to
start with it. We should be much more proud about Canada and all the things
that we have and can create here.
what are your marketing methods for product/businessand how long did it take before people started buying?

People started buying online right away. I spent a lot of effort in
designing the first webpages and letting people know that there is a little
new company making wooden building blocks. I had underestimated the amount
of effort it takes though to cut through the clutter online. I had worked in
IT before and was not completely unfamiliar about the online world, but
there has been a massive shift of large corporations focusing all their
efforts on only advertising online, and you just can’t compete with them
anymore.

The biggest “strategy” - if you can call it that - is word of mouth.
Creating a product that you can stand behind 100% and telling others about
it, be it online or in traditional ways. This takes a lot of time though.
The company is now almost 1 year old and it has not even scratched the
surface of where I would like it to be.

Do you market online or in a store? Do you encourage your client to
tell others about your business/products.

I sell both online and in brick and mortar stores. But I have noticed that
people just want to go to their favorite local toy store and buy what they
like. They might see it online and order it, but those are the minority. I
have had some time now to observe the toy business and drawn my own
conclusions. In the future I would really like to just sell through real
stores and give stores the tools and “advertisement” that they need in order
to sell our toys.

Stamp Away!

August 10th, 2009

My Background is in Early Childhood Education and I this product helps children learn how to spell their name. Read More about Lee-Ann of The Little Stamp Company!

My business is called The Little Stamp Co., www.littlestamp.com and we make personalized stamps for little ones in a large dotted font so they can stamp, trace and learn to print in a fun and interactive way.  Our stamps are large, easy to grasp, mess free, and made with child/ eco-friendly ink.  With three customized options the stamps are as unique as the kids they are made for!

Why did you start your business?

I started my business because I decided I wanted to stay home with my children.  I wanted the flexibility to work from home and schedule my own hours.

If you designed and invented a product how did your idea come about?

The Little Stamp Co. was originally developed when my daughter was 3 years old. She was keen to learn how to spell and print her name. I was continually ‘printing’ her name, Mackenzie, in dots so she could trace the letters. It repeatedly took a long time to “dot” Mackenzie’s name so I thought – why not create a fun stamp? I searched and searched for a suitable stamp and eventually the concept of our ‘Signature’ stamp was born.  Now, Mackenzie’s younger brother, Kian, is proudly learning to print with his own ‘Signature’ stamp too!

What are your marketing methods for your product/business
and how long did it take before people started buying?

I launched my product at The Children’s Trunk Show in Toronto in May 2008, people started buying immediately.  I concurrently launched the company website and began approaching mom bloggers to do product reviews as my main marketing strategy.  In addition, I sent my own press releases to parenting magazines and community parenting newspapers.  I listed my company with online directories, started using social media such as facebook, twitter, stumble upon, kirtsy etc, and got the word out through online avenues and word of mouth.

Do you market online or in a store? Do you encourage your client to
tell others about your business/products.

I market online at the moment, although I am looking toward a retail solution in the near future.  I sell on my own website and there are several online stores that also carry our stamps.  Of course, I encourage anyone and everyone to pass on information about our products and company.
